Children's Eye Tests in East Finchley
Children's eyes change quickly, and some conditions are far easier to address when they are caught early. Pre-school eye examinations, in particular, can identify problems before they affect a child's development, confidence or learning.
We have many years' experience examining children of all ages — including very young children, those with complex needs, learning disabilities and children who are non-verbal. NHS-funded examinations are available for all children under 16.
Your child's eye examination
Children's appointments are adapted to each child's age and ability. Reading is not required at any age — we have methods that work with very young children and with those who find standard testing difficult.
We take a patient and unhurried approach. Years of experience have shown us that a calm, considerate examination makes a genuine difference — both to the quality of what we can assess and to how a child feels about the experience.
At the end of the appointment, we explain our findings clearly to the parent or carer and discuss any recommended next steps. You will leave understanding what we found and what, if anything, we suggest.
Myopia management
Short-sightedness (myopia) is becoming increasingly common in children, with more time spent on screens and close-up activities contributing to its rise. While standard glasses correct blurred distance vision, they do not address the progression of myopia itself.
MiYOSMART lenses use innovative DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology, combining a clear central viewing zone with hundreds of tiny treatment segments surrounding it. These segments create a specific type of peripheral defocus, which aims to reduce the stimulus that can cause the eye to continue growing too long.
Rodenstock MyCon® lenses have been specifically developed for children with progressing myopia. They utilise HAPD™ (Horizontal Asymmetrical Peripheral Defocus) technology, which alters how light reaches the peripheral retina. By focusing peripheral light in front of the retina rather than behind it, the lenses aim to slow excessive eye growth while maintaining sharp central vision.
